Thalassoma hardwicke, commonly known as the Hardwicke Wrasse, is a strikingly colourful marine fish prized for its active behaviour and vibrant hues. This small variant is perfect for marine aquarists seeking an engaging addition to a larger reef or fish-only aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced due to its active nature and specific tank requirements.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive; may show territorial behaviour especially towards similar-sized wrasses or other active fish.
Diet: Carnivorous; thrives on a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets.
Minimum Tank Size: 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial stress.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While generally reef safe, they may prey on small invertebrates such as shrimp and small crabs.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef lighting and moderate water flow are suitable to mimic their natural habitat.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and territories. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in a suitably sized aquarium.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches) in captivity.
Regular water changes and stable water parameters are essential to maintain health. Avoid housing with overly aggressive species to prevent stress.
