Stenopus hispidus, commonly known as the Banded Coral Shrimp, is a popular and visually striking addition to marine aquariums. This pair features the species’ characteristic bright red and white banded legs and body, making them a standout in any reef setup.
Feeding: Stenopus hispidus are omnivorous scavengers and cleaners. They thrive on a diet of meaty foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and specialised invertebrate pellets. Regular feeding 2-3 times per week is recommended to maintain health.
Compatibility and Temperament: Generally peaceful and beneficial, these shrimp act as cleaners by removing parasites and dead tissue from fish. However, they may become territorial towards conspecifics or similar species, so keeping a bonded pair is advisable. Avoid housing with very small or delicate invertebrates that may be at risk.
Reef Safety: Yes. Stenopus hispidus is considered reef safe and will not harm corals or sessile invertebrates.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres is recommended to provide adequate space and stable water conditions. Moderate water flow and stable water parameters typical of reef aquariums are ideal.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock with crevices and hiding places where the shrimp can establish cleaning stations and feel secure.
Care Level: Moderate. Requires stable water quality and regular feeding.
Origin: Widely distributed in tropical and subtropical waters worldwide.
Maximum Size: Up to 7.5 cm (3 inches) in length.
