Stenopus devaneyi is a visually distinctive boxer shrimp prized in the marine aquarium hobby for its striking red and white banded legs and pincers. This species is a fascinating invertebrate that adds both colour and activity to reef tanks.
Care and Husbandry: Stenopus devaneyi requires stable water parameters typical of reef aquariums, including a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025 SG, and well-oxygenated water. It is best housed in a mature tank with plenty of live rock to provide hiding places and foraging opportunities.
Feeding: This shrimp is carnivorous and scavenges for meaty foods. Offer a varied diet including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and specialised invertebrate pellets. Feeding should be done 2-3 times weekly to maintain health.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: Generally peaceful, Stenopus devaneyi coexists well with most reef-safe fish and invertebrates. It may exhibit territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar species, so it is advisable to keep only one individual per tank unless the aquarium is very large. It is considered reef safe with caution, as it may occasionally nip at small or slow-moving fish and invertebrates.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres is recommended to provide adequate space and stable water conditions. Moderate water flow and moderate lighting are suitable, mimicking its natural reef habitat. Placement should include ample rockwork for shelter and foraging.
Additional Notes: This species is not commonly bred in captivity, so specimens are typically wild-caught. Handle with care during acclimation to reduce stress.
