The Siganus magnificus, commonly known as the magnificent rabbitfish, is a visually stunning species prized for its vibrant colouration and peaceful nature. This medium-sized fish is an excellent choice for experienced marine aquarists seeking a unique addition to their reef or fish-only tanks.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, the Siganus magnificus coexists well with other non-aggressive species. However, it may display territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar-shaped fish. It is best kept singly or as a mated pair in larger aquariums.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, this rabbitfish grazes on algae and marine vegetation. Supplement its diet with high-quality marine algae sheets, spirulina, and vegetable-based pellets to ensure optimal health.
Tank Requirements: Due to its active swimming behaviour and potential adult size, a minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended. Provide ample live rock for grazing and hiding places.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, it may nip at soft corals or clam mantles. Monitor closely when introduced to sensitive reef setups.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperatures between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and moderate water flow.
Adding the Siganus magnificus to your marine aquarium brings both beauty and functional algae control, enhancing the overall ecosystem when cared for properly.
