Sargocentron vexillarium, commonly known as a squirrelfish, is a captivating nocturnal species that adds vibrant colour and activity to marine aquariums. This small variant is best suited for experienced hobbyists who can provide the appropriate environment and care.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but shy, Sargocentron vexillarium is compatible with similarly non-aggressive tankmates. It is best kept singly or in pairs in larger tanks to avoid territorial disputes. Avoid housing with overly aggressive species.
Diet: This species is carnivorous, feeding primarily on meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feeding should be done in the evening or at night to align with its natural nocturnal behaviour.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and hiding places. The aquarium should be well-established with plenty of live rock to offer shelter and simulate natural crevices.
Water Parameters and Environment: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and pH 8.1-8.4. Moderate water flow is preferred to mimic natural reef environments without stressing the fish.
Lighting and Placement: Moderate lighting is suitable, with dimmer areas or shaded regions to accommodate its nocturnal nature. Position rockwork to create caves and overhangs for daytime refuge.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, it may prey on small invertebrates or ornamental shrimp, so careful monitoring is advised in reef setups.
