Sargocentron rubrum, commonly known as the Squirrelfish, is a visually striking species prized for its vivid red coloration and prominent eyes adapted for nocturnal activity. This large variant can reach a considerable size, making it suitable for spacious marine aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-established tank.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial with conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or in a large tank with ample hiding places.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feeds primarily on meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feeding should be done in the evening or at night to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 150 litres (40 gallons) to provide sufficient swimming space and territory.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate to low lighting preferred to accommodate nocturnal behaviour.
Water Flow: Moderate water movement to simulate natural reef environments.
Placement: Provide plenty of rockwork and caves for shelter and resting during daylight hours.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (approximately 8 inches).
Due to their nocturnal nature, Sargocentron rubrum are more active during the night and may hide during the day. They are generally reef safe with caution, as they may prey on small invertebrates.
