Sargocentron melanospilos, commonly known as the black-spot squirrelfish, is a medium-sized species admired for its vibrant red colouring and distinctive black spotting. This nocturnal fish is best suited to experienced marine aquarium keepers due to its specific care needs and shy temperament.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and a mature aquarium environment.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics. Best kept singly or in a large tank if multiple individuals are desired.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feeds primarily on meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feeding should be done in the evening to mimic natural nocturnal feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and hiding places.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting is suitable. This species is nocturnal and prefers dimmer conditions during the day with plenty of shaded areas.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow to replicate natural reef environments without causing stress.
Placement: Provide ample rockwork and caves for shelter. This fish is shy and requires hiding spots to feel secure during daylight hours.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (approximately 8 inches) in length.
Due to its nocturnal nature, the Sargocentron melanospilos is an excellent addition to a reef or fish-only marine aquarium where it can display natural behaviours. It is generally reef safe with caution, as it may prey on small invertebrates.
