Sargocentron coruscum, commonly known as a squirrelfish, is a captivating nocturnal species prized for its vibrant red colouring and distinctive large eyes. This large variant is best suited to marine aquarium enthusiasts with experience and adequate tank space.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial with conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or in a large tank with ample hiding places. Compatible with most peaceful community fish but may prey on small invertebrates.
Diet: Carnivorous, feeding primarily on meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feeding should occur in the evening or at night to mimic natural behaviour.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and hiding spots. The aquarium should have plenty of live rock to offer shelter and reduce stress.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting is preferred to simulate dusk conditions, and moderate water flow helps maintain water quality without stressing the fish.
Reef Compatibility: Reef safe with caution. May prey on small crustaceans and ornamental shrimp, so caution is advised when housing with delicate reef invertebrates.
Origin and Size: Native to tropical marine environments. This species can reach a maximum size of approximately 20 cm in captivity.
