Rhynchostracion nasus is a fascinating medium-sized boxfish species prized for its unique body shape and calm nature. This species is suitable for marine aquarists with some experience due to its specific care requirements.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, Rhynchostracion nasus can coexist with other non-aggressive fish species. Avoid housing with overly territorial or aggressive tank mates to reduce stress.
Diet: This omnivorous boxfish thrives on a varied diet including high-quality marine pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and algae-based foods. Regular feeding 2-3 times daily is recommended to maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres (approximately 40 gallons) is advised to provide ample swimming space and stable water conditions. The aquarium should be well-cycled with excellent filtration and regular water changes to maintain pristine water quality.
Water Parameters: Maintain temperature between 24-26°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 specific gravity, and pH between 8.1-8.4. Moderate water flow is preferred to mimic natural habitats without causing stress.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter. Ensure open swimming areas are available to accommodate its active nature.
Reef Safety: With caution – Rhynchostracion nasus may nip at small invertebrates or sessile corals, so careful monitoring is advised in reef setups.
