Prionurus scalprum, commonly referred to as the Scalpel Surgeonfish, is a robust and striking tang species that can grow to a substantial size, making it suitable only for experienced aquarists with large marine tanks. This extra large specimen demands a minimum tank size of 250 litres to accommodate its active swimming behaviour and territorial nature.
Temperament and Compatibility: This species is generally semi-aggressive and may show territorial behaviour, especially towards other tangs or similar-shaped fish. It is best kept singly or in a large, well-structured aquarium with plenty of hiding spaces and open swimming areas. Compatibility with peaceful community fish is possible, but caution is advised with smaller or more timid species.
Diet: Prionurus scalprum is primarily herbivorous, thriving on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplementing with high-quality dried seaweed sheets, spirulina, and occasional meaty foods such as mysis or brine shrimp will ensure optimal health and vibrant colouration.
Reef Compatibility: This species is considered With Caution in reef tanks. While it generally does not harm corals, its grazing habits may lead to incidental damage to delicate sessile invertebrates or soft corals. Providing ample macroalgae within the aquarium can help mitigate this behaviour.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters, excellent water quality, and a well-maintained environment.
Water Parameters and Environment: Maintain temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and pH 8.1-8.4. Moderate to strong water flow is recommended to simulate natural reef currents. Lighting should be moderate to support algal growth for grazing.
Origin: Not Provided.
Additional Notes: Regular monitoring for signs of stress or disease is advised. Quarantine new specimens before introduction to the main display tank.
