Pomacanthus imperator, or the Emperor Angelfish, is a highly sought-after marine fish prized for its vivid blue and yellow stripes and striking facial mask. Juveniles display a markedly different colour pattern, featuring concentric blue and white rings, making this species fascinating to observe throughout its growth stages.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. Emperor Angelfish can be territorial, especially towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or with other robust tank mates.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including marine algae, spirulina, high-quality angelfish preparations, mysis shrimp, and other meaty foods to ensure optimal health and vibrant colouration.
Minimum Tank Size: 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) or larger to accommodate their active swimming behaviour and territorial nature.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate to high lighting to support the growth of natural algae, which forms part of their diet.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow is ideal to mimic their natural reef environment.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding places. Ensure ample swimming space to reduce stress and aggression.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region, including the Red Sea and Great Barrier Reef.
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm (16 inches) in length.
Due to their size and dietary needs, Emperor Angelfish are best suited for experienced marine aquarists. Regular water changes and monitoring of water parameters are essential to maintain their health. Avoid housing with small, timid fish as they may be bullied.
