Pomacanthus navarchus, known as the Blue-girdled Angelfish, is a visually captivating species prized for its vibrant colours and unique juvenile-to-adult colour transformation. Available in various sizes, from juveniles to fully mature adults, this angelfish is a standout addition to large marine aquaria.
Care Level: This species is recommended for advanced hobbyists due to its specific care requirements and territorial nature.
Temperament and Compatibility: Pomacanthus navarchus is semi-aggressive and territorial, especially as it matures. It is best kept singly or as a mated pair in a suitably large tank. Compatibility with other angelfish or similarly sized species should be approached cautiously to avoid aggression.
Diet: This omnivorous angelfish thrives on a varied diet including marine algae, spirulina, high-quality angelfish preparations, mysis shrimp, and other meaty marine foods. Regular feeding of vegetable matter is essential to maintain vibrant colour and health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territories. The aquarium should be well-established with plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting and moderate water flow are ideal to mimic natural reef environments without stressing the fish.
Placement: Provide ample hiding places and rockwork to reduce stress and territorial disputes. This species appreciates a mature reef setup but is not considered reef safe due to its tendency to nip at sessile invertebrates.
Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around Indonesia and the Philippines.
Maximum Size: Typically grows up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
