The Pomacanthus imperator, commonly known as the Emperor Angelfish, is a highly sought-after species in the marine aquarium hobby due to its vivid blue and yellow stripes and distinctive facial markings. This extra large adult specimen showcases the full splendour of its mature coloration, making it a stunning centrepiece for large marine tanks.
Care Level: This species requires advanced care and is best suited for experienced marine aquarists. It demands stable water conditions and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament: The Emperor Angelfish is semi-aggressive and territorial, especially towards conspecifics and similar species. It is best kept singly or with other robust tank mates to avoid conflicts.
Diet: Pomacanthus imperator is omnivorous with a preference for sponges and algae in the wild. In captivity, provide a varied diet including high-quality marine angelfish pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, spirulina, and marine algae to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: Due to its large adult size, a minimum tank volume of 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally safe with mature corals, Emperor Angelfish may nip at sessile invertebrates such as sponges and soft corals. Careful monitoring is advised in reef setups.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. Ensure good water quality with stable parameters.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding places to reduce stress and territorial aggression.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region, including the Red Sea and Great Barrier Reef.
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm (16 inches) in length.
