The Pomacanthus imperator, or Emperor Angelfish, is renowned for its vivid blue and yellow stripes and commanding presence in large marine aquaria. This adult specimen, classified as large, is best suited for experienced hobbyists due to its size and specific care needs.
Temperament and Compatibility: Emperor Angelfish are semi-aggressive and territorial, especially as they mature. They can coexist with other large, robust fish but may harass smaller or more passive species. Avoid housing with other angelfish unless the tank is exceptionally large.
Diet: This species is omnivorous, requiring a varied diet including marine algae, sponges, and high-quality meaty foods such as mysis shrimp and finely chopped seafood. Supplement with spirulina and specialised angelfish preparations to ensure optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 250 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territory. Stable water parameters with excellent filtration and regular water changes are essential.
Water Conditions: Maintain temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and pH 8.1-8.4. Moderate to strong water flow is preferred to mimic natural reef environments.
Reef Safety: With caution. While generally reef safe, Emperor Angelfish may nip at corals and sessile invertebrates, especially sponges and tunicates.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Position the fish in a well-established aquarium with mature biological filtration.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm (16 inches) in captivity.
