Overview: Pempheris spp., commonly known as sweepers or cardinal fish, are a genus of nocturnal, schooling fish appreciated for their unique behaviour and striking appearance. These medium to large specimens are best suited to experienced aquarists with adequately sized marine tanks.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful and shy, Pempheris spp. prefer to be kept in groups and are most active during the evening and night. They coexist well with other peaceful species but may become stressed if housed with aggressive or overly boisterous tankmates.
Diet: In the aquarium, Pempheris spp. accept a varied diet including frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets or flakes. Feeding should be done in the evening to align with their natural nocturnal feeding habits.
Tank Requirements: Due to their schooling nature and potential size, a minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce stress. A well-established tank with stable water parameters is essential.
Reef Compatibility: Pempheris spp. are generally considered reef safe, posing little threat to corals or invertebrates. However, caution is advised as they may occasionally nip at small invertebrates.
Care Level: Moderate. Suitable for aquarists with some marine experience who can provide appropriate tank conditions and diet.
Additional Notes: These fish appreciate dim lighting or shaded areas within the aquarium to mimic their natural crevice-dwelling behaviour during daylight hours. Providing rockwork or caves enhances their comfort and encourages natural behaviours.
