Odontodactylus scyllarus, commonly known as the Peacock Mantis Shrimp, is a visually stunning and highly active invertebrate native to the Indo-Pacific region. This medium to large specimen is prized for its vivid colours and impressive hunting capabilities, making it a captivating addition to a marine aquarium.
Care Level: This species is recommended for experienced keepers due to its specialised care requirements and aggressive nature.
Feeding: Odontodactylus scyllarus is a carnivorous predator that thrives on a diet of meaty foods such as live or frozen crustaceans, molluscs, and fish. Regular feeding with high-protein foods is essential to maintain health.
Compatibility: This mantis shrimp is highly territorial and aggressive, often incompatible with other tank inhabitants, especially small or slow-moving invertebrates and fish. It is best housed singly in a species-specific or suitably secure mixed reef tank.
Reef Safety: No. Due to its predatory nature, it poses a risk to reef tank inhabitants, including fish, corals, and other invertebrates.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres is recommended to provide sufficient space and stable water conditions. The aquarium must have a secure lid to prevent escape, as mantis shrimps are known to be adept at finding exits.
Environment: Provide plenty of live rock with crevices and burrowing substrate to mimic natural habitat and allow natural behaviours such as burrow construction.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 18 cm (7 inches).
