Odontodactylus scyllarus, commonly known as the Peacock Mantis Shrimp, is a visually stunning and highly active marine invertebrate prized by experienced aquarists. This species is renowned for its vibrant colours and powerful raptorial appendages used for hunting.
Care Level: Moderate to Advanced. This species requires a secure tank with plenty of hiding places and a robust lid to prevent escape.
Feeding: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as frozen shrimp, small fish, and crustaceans. They are active hunters and may require live or fresh food to thrive.
Compatibility: Not reef safe. Peacock Mantis Shrimp are predatory and will attack small fish, invertebrates, and other tank inhabitants. Best kept singly in a species-specific or fish-only marine aquarium.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 75 litres is recommended to provide adequate space and stable water parameters. Provide a sandy or rubble substrate with plenty of rockwork for burrowing and shelter.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Due to their strength and potential aggression, Odontodactylus scyllarus is best suited for advanced hobbyists who can provide a secure environment and specialised care.
