Octopus vulgaris, or the common octopus, is a highly intelligent and curious cephalopod that captivates marine aquarium enthusiasts. Available in various sizes, this species requires a dedicated and secure tank setup due to its escape tendencies and specific care needs.
Care Level: Advanced. Octopus vulgaris demands attentive husbandry, stable water parameters, and a well-structured environment.
Feeding: Carnivorous diet including live or frozen crustaceans, molluscs, and fish. Feeding should be frequent and varied to meet nutritional needs.
Compatibility: Best kept singly due to territorial behaviour. Not reef safe as it may prey on tank invertebrates and fish.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 100 litres recommended for smaller specimens, larger tanks preferred for bigger individuals. Secure lids are essential to prevent escapes.
Environment: Provide ample hiding places such as caves and PVC pipes. Moderate water flow and dim lighting replicate natural habitats.
Additional Notes: Octopus vulgaris is a short-lived species, typically living 1–2 years in captivity. Regular water changes and excellent water quality are critical for health.
