Neoniphon opercularis, commonly referred to as the Squirrelfish, is a captivating nocturnal species prized for its vivid red and white colouration and distinctive large eyes adapted for low-light environments. This medium-sized fish is an excellent addition to marine aquariums with a minimum tank size of 150 litres, providing ample space for its natural behaviour.
Care Level: Moderate care is recommended, focusing on stable water parameters and a suitable diet. This species thrives in well-established tanks with plenty of hiding places such as rockwork or caves to mimic its natural reef habitat.
Temperament and Compatibility: Neoniphon opercularis is generally peaceful but may exhibit territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar species. It is compatible with a range of peaceful to semi-aggressive tank mates but should not be housed with very small or slow-moving fish that may be mistaken for prey.
Diet: Carnivorous by nature, this squirrelfish benefits from a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feeding should be done in the evening to align with its nocturnal activity.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef safe, Neoniphon opercularis may disturb small invertebrates or corals during nocturnal foraging.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting is preferred to simulate dusk conditions, with moderate water flow to replicate natural reef currents without causing stress.
Placement: Provide ample rockwork and caves to allow hiding and resting during daylight hours. Position in a quieter section of the aquarium to reduce stress.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Approximately 15 cm (Medium variant).
