Neoniphon opercularis, commonly referred to as the Large Squirrelfish, is a visually striking species prized for its vivid red hues and prominent eyes adapted for nocturnal activity. This species is best suited for marine aquarists with some experience due to its specific care requirements.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and a mature aquarium environment.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial with conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or in pairs in larger tanks.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feeds primarily on meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feeding should be done in the evening to mimic natural nocturnal feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 150 litres (approximately 40 US gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and hiding spots.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting is preferred, with dimmer conditions in the evening to accommodate nocturnal behaviour.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow to replicate natural reef environments without causing stress.
Placement: Provide plenty of rockwork and caves for shelter during daylight hours. This species appreciates shaded areas and crevices to retreat into.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (approximately 8 inches) in length.
Additional Notes: Neoniphon opercularis is not reef safe as it may prey on small invertebrates and fish. It is best housed in a fish-only or fish-dominant aquarium. Regular water changes and stable water chemistry are essential for optimal health.
