Nemateleotris decora, commonly known as the Elegant Firefish, is a strikingly colourful goby species prized for its peaceful temperament and vibrant appearance. This species is an excellent choice for marine aquarium enthusiasts seeking a visually appealing yet easy-to-care-for fish.
Temperament and Compatibility: Nemateleotris decora is peaceful and generally compatible with other non-aggressive fish. It is reef safe and can be kept in community tanks with other peaceful species. Avoid housing with large predatory fish that may view it as prey.
Diet: This species is carnivorous and thrives on a varied diet of meaty foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality prepared marine pellets or flakes. Feeding should be done 1-2 times daily to maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres (20 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and hiding spots. The aquarium should have plenty of live rock for shelter and crevices where the fish can retreat when threatened.
Water Parameters and Environment: Maintain stable marine water conditions with a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025 SG, and pH between 8.1 and 8.4. Moderate water flow is preferred to mimic their natural reef habitat without causing stress.
Lighting and Placement: Standard reef lighting is suitable. Place Nemateleotris decora in mid to upper levels of the tank where it can hover comfortably and display its vibrant colours.
Additional Notes: This species is shy initially but will become more confident with time. It is advisable to keep them in pairs or small groups if space allows, as they can form small social groups in the wild.
