Haemulon chrysargyreum, commonly referred to as the Caribbean Bluestriped Grunt, is a visually stunning snapper native to the western Atlantic Ocean. This species is prized in the marine aquarium hobby for its vibrant blue and yellow horizontal stripes and active schooling behaviour.
Care Level: Moderate. This species requires stable water parameters and a suitably sized aquarium to thrive.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but may display mild territorial behaviour, especially in confined spaces. Best kept in groups or with other peaceful tankmates.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feeds on meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and high-quality pellet or flake foods formulated for carnivorous marine fish.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 300 litres (approximately 80 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial aggression.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting needs.
Water Flow: Moderate water movement mimicking natural reef currents is ideal.
Placement: Mid to upper water column swimmers. Provide open swimming areas with some rockwork for shelter.
Origin: Western Atlantic, including the Caribbean Sea.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches) in captivity.
Haemulon chrysargyreum is considered reef safe with caution as it may occasionally nip at small invertebrates or corals, especially if underfed. It is best housed in a fish-only or fish-plus-shrimp aquarium rather than a heavily stocked reef tank.
Regular water changes and stable water quality are essential to maintain health. This species benefits from a varied diet and a peaceful community environment.
