Haemulon sciurus, commonly referred to as the Blue-striped Grunt, is a visually striking snapper species prized for its vibrant blue and yellow striped pattern. This extra large variant is best suited to experienced aquarists with spacious marine tanks.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, Haemulon sciurus coexists well with other non-aggressive fish species. It is best kept in groups or pairs but ensure ample space to reduce territorial behaviour. Avoid housing with overly aggressive or very small fish.
Diet: This species is carnivorous and thrives on a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplement with pellet or flake foods formulated for marine carnivores to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: Due to its size and active swimming nature, a minimum tank size of 300 litres is recommended for the extra large Haemulon sciurus. Provide plenty of open swimming space alongside rockwork for shelter and resting.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow. Regular water changes and high water quality are essential for optimal health.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While generally reef safe, this species may occasionally nip at smaller invertebrates or corals, so monitor behaviour closely if kept in reef aquariums.
