The Naso unicornis, or Unicorn Tang, is a visually stunning surgeonfish recognised by its elongated body and distinctive horn-like protrusion on the forehead. This extra large variant is suitable for advanced hobbyists who can provide ample space and stable water conditions.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful and social, the Unicorn Tang can be kept with other tangs and similarly sized fish, but territorial disputes may occur if the tank is too small. Avoid housing with overly aggressive species.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, Naso unicornis thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality herbivore pellets and occasional meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: Due to their size and active swimming behaviour, a minimum tank size of 250 litres is recommended. Provide plenty of swimming space along with live rock for grazing and hiding.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.020-1.025 SG, and moderate water flow. Regular water changes and excellent filtration are essential to keep water quality high.
Reef Safety: With Caution – While generally reef safe, they may nip at soft corals and clam mantles, so monitor behaviour closely if kept in reef systems.
Adding a Naso unicornis to your marine aquarium brings a majestic presence and natural grazing behaviour that helps control algae growth. Ensure you meet the husbandry requirements for a healthy and thriving specimen.
