The Naso unicornis, or Unicorn Tang, is a visually captivating surgeonfish renowned for the distinctive horn-like protrusion on its forehead. This large tang displays a sleek body with subtle colouration and elegant swimming behaviour, making it a prized addition to mature marine aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Due to its size and dietary needs, it is best suited for experienced hobbyists.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but may show territorial behaviour towards other tangs or similar-shaped fish. Best kept singly or in a large tank with ample swimming space.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Provide a varied diet rich in marine algae, seaweed sheets, and specialised tang pellets to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to accommodate its active swimming and growth potential.
Reef Safety: With caution. While generally reef safe, it may nip at soft corals or clam mantles, so monitor behaviour closely.
Lighting & Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable to mimic natural reef conditions.
Placement: Provide plenty of open swimming space with live rock for grazing and shelter.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
