The Blackbar Soldierfish (Myripristis jacobus) is a captivating nocturnal species native to the western Atlantic Ocean. Recognisable by its bright red body and prominent black bar behind the head, this fish adds vibrant colour and unique behaviour to mature marine aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but may be shy and nocturnal. Best kept with other non-aggressive species. Avoid housing with very small or timid fish that may be stressed by its activity at night.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feeding should be done primarily in the evening or at night to match natural feeding habits.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and hiding spots. Provide plenty of rockwork and caves to mimic natural crevices for shelter during daylight hours.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting is suitable, with subdued lighting preferred to accommodate its nocturnal nature. Moderate water flow is ideal to replicate natural reef conditions without causing stress.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef safe, this species may prey on small invertebrates and should be monitored closely in reef tanks containing delicate shrimp or small crustaceans.
Origin: Western Atlantic, including the Caribbean Sea.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (approximately 8 inches) in captivity.
