Myripristis jacobus, commonly known as the squirrelfish, is a captivating addition to any large marine aquarium. Recognisable by its bright red body and large eyes adapted for nocturnal activity, this species adds both colour and character to your tank.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be shy and nocturnal. Best kept with non-aggressive tank mates.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feeding should be done primarily in the evening to mimic natural feeding habits.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and hiding spots. Provide plenty of rockwork and caves to simulate natural shelter.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting is sufficient. Water flow should be moderate to low to replicate their natural reef environment.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, they may disturb small invertebrates or shrimp.
Origin: Western Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean Sea.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches).
Adding a Large Myripristis jacobus to your marine aquarium offers a unique nocturnal presence and vibrant colouration, enhancing the diversity and visual appeal of your aquatic community.
