The California Bat Ray (Myliobatis californica) is a fascinating species native to the eastern Pacific Ocean, recognised for its broad, diamond-shaped disc and long tail. This medium-sized ray is a captivating addition to large marine aquariums, offering both visual appeal and interesting behaviour.
Care Level: Intermediate to advanced. Due to its size and specific husbandry needs, this species is best suited for experienced aquarists.
Temperament: Generally peaceful and non-aggressive, the California Bat Ray coexists well with other large, non-aggressive tank mates. It is important to avoid housing with small or delicate species that may be at risk.
Diet: Carnivorous. Their diet should consist of a variety of meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, molluscs, and specialised ray pellets to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 1000 litres (approximately 220 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and a suitable sandy substrate for burrowing and resting.
Lighting Requirements: Standard aquarium lighting is sufficient; no specialised lighting is necessary.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow is ideal to mimic natural coastal environments while ensuring good oxygenation.
Placement: Provide a spacious tank with a fine sandy substrate to protect the ray’s delicate ventral surface. Decorations should be minimal to maximise swimming space and prevent injury.
Origin: Eastern Pacific Ocean, notably along the Californian coast.
Maximum Size: Up to 1.5 metres (disc width), though individuals in captivity may vary.
Additional Notes: Rays are sensitive to water quality; maintain excellent filtration and regular water changes. Avoid sharp or rough substrate and décor to prevent skin damage. Quarantine new specimens to prevent disease introduction.
