Lythrypnus dalli, commonly known as the Bluebanded Goby, is a charming temperate water species native to the Pacific coast of North America. This small goby is prized for its vibrant colours and peaceful nature, making it a suitable addition to temperate marine aquariums.
Care and Husbandry: Lythrypnus dalli thrives in cooler water temperatures ranging from 12°C to 18°C, reflecting its temperate origin. A minimum tank size of 60 litres is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and territory. The species prefers a well-structured environment with plenty of live rock for hiding and establishing territories.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, this goby coexists well with other non-aggressive fish species. It may display territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar gobies, so housing multiple individuals requires careful monitoring and sufficient space.
Diet: An opportunistic carnivore, Lythrypnus dalli accepts a varied diet including live or frozen meaty foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Regular feeding 1-2 times daily ensures optimal health.
Reef Compatibility: This species is considered reef safe with caution, as it may occasionally nip at small invertebrates or sessile animals. Monitoring is advised when kept in reef systems.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable water quality with moderate water flow and lighting suitable for temperate setups. Regular water changes and good filtration are essential to support this species’ health.
