Monodactylus argenteus, commonly known as the Silver Moony, is a visually captivating marine fish prized for its laterally compressed, silver body adorned with striking black vertical bands. This extra large variant is suitable for marine aquarium enthusiasts who can provide ample space and stable water conditions.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. The Silver Moony requires a well-established tank with stable parameters and regular maintenance.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be skittish. Best kept in groups or with similarly sized, non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid housing with very small or highly territorial species.
Diet: Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality marine flakes, pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, and vegetable matter such as spirulina or marine algae to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: Due to their active swimming behaviour and potential size, a minimum of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended for a small group.
Water Parameters: Maintain temperature between 22-26°C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity at 1.020-1.025 SG. Moderate water flow is preferred to mimic their natural estuarine and coastal habitats.
Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region, commonly found in estuaries and coastal waters.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (8 inches) in captivity.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef safe, they may nip at soft corals or small invertebrates if underfed or stressed.
Providing a tank with ample swimming space, stable water quality, and a varied diet will help ensure the health and longevity of your Silver Moony. Regular observation and maintenance are essential for this species.
