Monodactylus argenteus, commonly referred to as the Silver Moony Fish, is a visually captivating species prized for its shimmering silver body and distinctive shape. This large variant is best suited for experienced marine aquarists due to its size and specific care needs.
Care Level: Moderate to Advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a spacious environment to thrive.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but active swimmers. They can be kept in groups if introduced simultaneously to reduce aggression. Compatible with other similarly sized, non-aggressive marine fish. Avoid housing with very small or highly territorial species.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including high-quality marine flakes, pellets, frozen foods such as brine shrimp and mysis shrimp, and occasional vegetable matter to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 200 litres is recommended to accommodate their active swimming behaviour and growth potential.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 22-26°C, salinity at 1.020-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting needs.
Placement: Mid to upper levels of the aquarium where they have ample swimming space. Provide open swimming areas with some rockwork or artificial structures for shelter.
Origin: Native to Indo-Pacific coastal waters, often found in estuaries and brackish environments.
Maximum Size: Typically grows up to 25 cm in captivity.
Reef Safety: With Caution. May nip at soft corals or small invertebrates; not recommended for sensitive reef tanks.
