Microcanthus strigatus is a visually captivating marine fish recognised by its bold black and white vertical stripes and compact, oval-shaped body. This species is moderately sized, making it a suitable addition for marine aquarists with intermediate experience.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can show territorial behaviour, especially in smaller tanks. Best kept with other non-aggressive species. Avoid housing with very small or timid fish to prevent stress.
Diet: Omnivorous; thrives on a varied diet including high-quality marine flakes, pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Regular feeding 2-3 times daily is recommended to maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is advised to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial disputes. Stable water parameters with a temperature range of 22-26°C, salinity of 1.020-1.025, and pH between 8.1-8.4 are ideal.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While not inherently harmful to corals, their activity and occasional nipping may stress sensitive reef inhabitants. Monitor behaviour closely if housed in reef setups.
Care Level: Moderate. Requires stable water conditions and a balanced diet. Suitable for aquarists with some marine fish experience.
