Microcanthus strigatus, commonly known as the Striped Microcanthus or Striped Jack, is a visually captivating marine fish prized for its bold black and white striped pattern. This large specimen is suitable for experienced hobbyists with established aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate. This species requires stable water conditions and a minimum tank size to thrive.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar-shaped fish. Best kept singly or in pairs in larger tanks.
Diet: Omnivorous. Accepts a varied diet including high-quality marine flakes, pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood.
Minimum Tank Size: 150 litres (40 gallons) recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. This species is adaptable but prefers well-oxygenated water.
Placement: Mid to upper levels of the aquarium, with plenty of open swimming space and some rockwork or caves for shelter.
Compatibility: Compatible with a variety of peaceful community fish. Avoid housing with aggressive or very small fish that may be seen as prey.
Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (8 inches) in length.
