The female Macropharyngodon meleagris, commonly known as the Black-spotted Wrasse or Leopard Wrasse, is a striking addition to any marine aquarium. Recognised for its distinctive spotted pattern and vibrant colours, this species is a peaceful and active swimmer that thrives in well-maintained reef environments.
Care Level: Moderate – best suited for hobbyists with some marine aquarium experience.
Temperament: Generally peaceful and non-aggressive, making it compatible with a variety of tank mates. However, it may be shy initially and requires ample hiding places.
Diet: Carnivorous – feeds on small invertebrates, copepods, amphipods, and other meaty frozen or live foods. A varied diet including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised wrasse pellets is recommended.
Minimum Tank Size: 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) to provide sufficient swimming space and territory.
Reef Compatibility: Yes – safe for reef tanks and will not harm corals or sessile invertebrates.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting and gentle to moderate water flow are ideal to mimic natural reef conditions.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock with crevices and sandy substrate for burrowing and hiding. This species often buries itself in the sand when resting or threatened.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 12 cm (4.7 inches).
When introducing Macropharyngodon meleagris females to your aquarium, ensure a peaceful community and stable water parameters. Regular feeding and a well-established tank with abundant microfauna will support their health and natural behaviours.
