Care and Husbandry: Lytechinus variegatus thrives in well-established marine tanks with stable water parameters. They require a minimum tank size of 30 gallons (approximately 114 litres) to ensure adequate space and water quality. These urchins prefer moderate water flow and low to moderate lighting conditions, mimicking their natural shallow reef habitats.
Feeding primarily consists of algae and detritus found naturally in the aquarium, but supplementary feeding with dried seaweed or specialised invertebrate foods can support their health, especially in tanks with low algal growth. They are generally peaceful and reef safe, making them suitable for community reef tanks; however, care should be taken to ensure they do not damage delicate corals or sessile invertebrates.
