Lyncina vitellus, known as the Vitellus Cowrie, is a visually captivating marine invertebrate popular among reef aquarium enthusiasts. Its smooth, glossy shell features distinctive spotted patterns, making it a prized addition to mature reef tanks.
Care Level: Moderate. This species requires stable water conditions and a mature aquarium environment.
Diet: Primarily feeds on algae and detritus. Supplement with marine algae sheets or specialised invertebrate foods if natural algae growth is insufficient.
Compatibility: Generally peaceful and reef safe, Lyncina vitellus coexists well with other non-aggressive tank inhabitants. Avoid housing with predatory fish or invertebrates that may harm the cowrie.
Reef Safety: Yes. This cowrie poses no threat to corals or sessile invertebrates.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres is recommended to provide ample space and stable water parameters. Maintain a well-established reef system with live rock to support natural grazing behaviour.
Water Parameters: Stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, and moderate water flow.
Placement: Position in shaded or low-light areas of the aquarium, ideally on or near live rock where it can graze comfortably.
Additional Notes: Handle with care as cowries are sensitive to sudden changes in water quality. Quarantine new specimens to prevent disease introduction.
