Lissocarcinus laevis is a fascinating small crab species popular in marine aquariums due to its peaceful nature and reef compatibility. Available in various sizes, this crab is an excellent choice for hobbyists looking to add interesting invertebrate diversity to their tanks.
Care and Husbandry: Lissocarcinus laevis requires a well-established marine aquarium with stable water parameters. A minimum tank size of 30 litres is recommended to provide sufficient space and maintain water quality. They thrive in tanks with moderate water flow and stable salinity.
Feeding: This species is omnivorous and will accept a varied diet including small meaty foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood, as well as algae and detritus. Regular feeding 2-3 times per week is advised to maintain health.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: Lissocarcinus laevis is peaceful and reef safe, making it suitable for community reef tanks. It coexists well with other invertebrates and non-aggressive fish species. However, avoid housing with large predatory fish or aggressive crabs that may stress or harm it.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock or coral rubble to offer hiding places and grazing surfaces. This will help the crab feel secure and encourage natural behaviours.
Additional Notes: As with all marine invertebrates, maintaining excellent water quality and stable conditions is essential for long-term health. Quarantine new specimens where possible to reduce the risk of introducing pests or disease.
