The Atlantic Horseshoe Crab (Limulus polyphemus) is a remarkable marine invertebrate known for its distinctive, prehistoric appearance and ecological importance. This extra large specimen is suitable for advanced marine aquarium keepers interested in unique and resilient livestock.
Care and Husbandry: Limulus polyphemus requires a well-established marine aquarium with a sandy or fine substrate to allow natural burrowing behaviour. Maintain stable water parameters with a temperature range of 18-24°C, salinity between 1.023-1.025 SG, and a pH of 8.1-8.4. Moderate water flow is recommended to mimic their natural coastal habitats.
Feeding: This species is a scavenger and detritivore, feeding primarily on small molluscs, worms, and organic detritus. Supplement their diet with sinking pellets, frozen or live meaty foods such as bloodworms or brine shrimp to ensure nutritional balance.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: The Atlantic Horseshoe Crab is generally peaceful but may disturb small, delicate invertebrates due to its foraging behaviour. It is considered reef safe with caution, as it can inadvertently damage sessile organisms while searching for food.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (40 gallons) is recommended to provide ample space for movement and natural behaviour. Ensure the aquarium has a secure lid as horseshoe crabs can occasionally attempt to escape.
Additional Notes: This species is not commonly bred in captivity, so sourcing should be done responsibly. Regular water quality monitoring and gentle handling are essential to maintain health.
