Hippopus Hippopus is a visually impressive clam species prized in marine aquariums for its vibrant mantle and relatively hardy nature. This small specimen is suitable for experienced hobbyists who maintain stable, mature reef systems.
Care and Husbandry: Hippopus Hippopus requires moderate lighting, ideally provided by LED or T5 fixtures that simulate natural sunlight. Moderate water flow is recommended to ensure proper gas exchange without stressing the clam.
Feeding is essential, especially for smaller specimens. While Hippopus clams derive much of their nutrition from photosynthesis via symbiotic zooxanthellae, supplemental feeding with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods will promote healthy growth.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: This species is reef safe and compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants. Avoid housing with aggressive fish or invertebrates that may nip at the clam’s mantle.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 100 litres is advised to maintain stable water parameters. Ensure calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium levels are kept within optimal ranges to support shell growth.
Placement should be on a stable substrate or rockwork where the clam can attach securely and receive adequate light.
