Hippocampus reidi, commonly known as the Longsnout Seahorse, is a striking marine fish prized for its vivid bright red coloration and elegant appearance. Our seahorses are tank-bred, ensuring healthier specimens better adapted to aquarium life.
Care Level: Moderate – requires specialised husbandry and stable water conditions.
Temperament: Peaceful and slow-moving, Hippocampus reidi is best kept in a calm community or species-only tank to avoid stress and competition.
Diet: Carnivorous, feeding primarily on live or frozen mysis shrimp and other small crustaceans. Frequent feeding (2-3 times daily) is recommended due to their high metabolism.
Minimum Tank Size: 75 litres (20 gallons) to provide adequate swimming space and stable water parameters.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting is sufficient; avoid intense lighting to reduce stress.
Water Flow: Low to moderate water flow mimics natural habitats and facilitates feeding without causing distress.
Placement: Provide plenty of hitching posts such as macroalgae, artificial seagrass, or branching corals to allow natural clinging behaviour.
Origin: Tank-bred specimens, originally native to the western Atlantic, including the Caribbean Sea.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches) in length.
Hippocampus reidi requires stable, pristine water conditions with regular monitoring of parameters such as temperature (22-26°C), salinity (1.020-1.025 SG), and pH (8.1-8.4). Avoid aggressive tank mates and ensure a peaceful environment to promote health and longevity.
