The French Grunt (Haemulon flavolineatum) is a visually captivating snapper species popular among marine aquarium enthusiasts. Recognisable by its bright yellow longitudinal stripes running along a silver-blue body, this fish adds vibrant colour and dynamic movement to larger reef or fish-only marine tanks.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, the French Grunt coexists well with other non-aggressive fish species. It is best kept in groups or pairs to mimic natural schooling behaviour, which helps reduce stress and encourages natural activity. Avoid housing with highly aggressive or territorial species to maintain harmony.
Diet: This carnivorous species thrives on a varied diet consisting of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and specialised marine pellets or flakes. Feeding multiple small meals daily supports optimal health and vibrant coloration.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space. The aquarium should have stable water parameters typical of a marine environment: temperature 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity 1.023-1.025 SG. Moderate water flow and good filtration are essential to maintain water quality.
Placement: Provide plenty of open swimming areas alongside rockwork or coral structures for shelter. While generally reef safe, caution is advised if housing with small invertebrates, as the French Grunt may occasionally prey on them.
Origin: Western Atlantic, including the Caribbean Sea.
