The Golden Trevally (Gnathanodon speciosus) is a striking and highly sought-after marine fish, especially in its juvenile stage where it displays bold yellow and black stripes. As it matures, the pattern fades to a more subtle golden hue. This species is best suited for experienced marine aquarists due to its large adult size and specific care requirements.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful and social, Golden Trevally can be kept with other large, non-aggressive fish. They are active swimmers and do best in groups or pairs but should not be housed with very small or timid species due to their size and activity level.
Diet: Carnivorous by nature, Gnathanodon speciosus thrives on a varied diet including meaty foods such as chopped seafood, crustaceans, and high-quality marine pellets. Regular feeding supports their health and vibrant coloration.
Tank Requirements: Due to their potential size of up to 90 cm (35 inches), a minimum tank size of 1000 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space. Strong water flow and excellent filtration are essential to maintain water quality. Lighting requirements are standard for marine fish, with moderate lighting preferred to mimic their natural environment.
Placement: Provide open swimming areas with some large rock formations or caves for shelter. Juveniles appreciate hiding spots, while adults require more open space.
Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region, Golden Trevally are found in coastal waters and coral reefs.
