The Echinothrix calamaris, commonly referred to as the Collector Urchin, is a visually impressive sea urchin species prized for its algae grazing capabilities and unique appearance. This large variant features long, slender spines with distinctive banding, making it a captivating addition to mature marine reef aquariums.
Care and Husbandry: Echinothrix calamaris requires a well-established tank with stable water parameters and plenty of live rock to graze upon. It is primarily herbivorous, feeding on various types of algae, helping to maintain a clean aquarium environment. Supplementary feeding with dried seaweed or specialised invertebrate foods is recommended to ensure optimal health.
Compatibility: Generally peaceful and reef safe, this urchin coexists well with most reef inhabitants. However, care should be taken when housing with delicate corals or slow-moving invertebrates, as the urchin’s spines can cause accidental damage. Avoid keeping with predatory fish or invertebrates known to prey on sea urchins.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres is advised to provide sufficient space and stable conditions. Moderate water flow and moderate lighting are suitable, mimicking natural reef environments. Placement should allow the urchin to roam freely while having access to shaded areas to avoid excessive light exposure.
Additional Notes: Handle with care, as the spines can be sharp and may cause injury. Regular monitoring of water quality and algae availability will promote longevity and wellbeing.
