The Porcupine Puffer (Diodon holocanthus) is a striking species prized for its ability to inflate its body and erect sharp spines as a defence mechanism. This tiny variant is ideal for marine aquarists seeking an intriguing and interactive fish. Due to its specialised care needs, it is recommended for experienced keepers.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial. Best housed with robust tank mates that are not small enough to be considered prey. Avoid aggressive or very small fish to prevent stress or injury.
Diet: Carnivorous, requiring a varied diet of meaty foods such as molluscs, crustaceans, and specialised frozen or prepared puffer foods. Hard-shelled prey items help maintain beak health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce stress. The aquarium should have plenty of hiding places and live rock for natural grazing and shelter.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow. Regular water changes and excellent filtration are essential.
Reef Safety: With Caution – may nip at invertebrates or corals, so caution is advised in reef setups.
