Dendrochirus brachypterus, or the Shortfin Lionfish, is a fascinating member of the scorpionfish family prized for its ornate appearance and unique behaviour. This small variant typically reaches up to 15cm in length, making it suitable for medium to large marine aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank.
Temperament: Generally solitary and territorial. It can be aggressive towards smaller fish and invertebrates, so careful selection of tankmates is essential.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feeds primarily on small crustaceans and fish. Offer a varied diet including frozen mysis shrimp, krill, and live feeder fish to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) to provide adequate space for swimming and territory establishment.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting is sufficient; avoid overly bright conditions to reduce stress.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef environments is ideal.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock with crevices and caves for hiding. Position in a quieter area of the aquarium to reduce stress.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. The Shortfin Lionfish has venomous spines and may prey on small invertebrates and fish, so it is not fully reef safe.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 15cm (6 inches).
Due to its venomous spines, handle with care during maintenance. This species is best suited for aquarists with experience in keeping predatory marine fish.
