The Dendrochirus brachypterus, or Shortfin Turkeyfish, is a visually stunning scorpionfish species known for its ornate fins and cryptic behaviour. This medium-sized specimen is a captivating addition to mature marine aquaria, especially those specialising in predatory or scorpionfish species.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally solitary and territorial, the Shortfin Turkeyfish can be aggressive towards smaller fish and invertebrates. It is best kept with larger, non-aggressive tankmates. Avoid housing with small crustaceans or fish that may be viewed as prey.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as live or frozen mysis shrimp, krill, and small fish. Regular feeding 2-3 times per week is recommended to maintain health.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is advised to provide adequate space and stable water conditions.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting is suitable, mimicking shaded reef environments. Water flow should be moderate to low to replicate natural habitats and reduce stress.
Placement: Provide ample rockwork and hiding places to allow natural ambush behaviour and reduce stress. Position the fish in a quieter section of the aquarium away from aggressive or overly active species.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches).
Reef Safety: With Caution. This species may prey on small invertebrates and fish, so it is not fully reef safe.
