The Decorator Crab (Philippines) is a remarkable marine invertebrate prized for its unique habit of camouflaging itself by attaching algae, sponges, and other materials to its carapace. This behaviour not only provides protection from predators but also adds a natural aesthetic to your marine aquarium.
Available in various sizes, these crabs are suitable for a range of tank setups, though best kept in established reef or fish-only systems with stable water parameters. They are generally peaceful and can coexist with many other invertebrates and fish species, but care should be taken when housing with aggressive tank mates.
Feeding: Decorator Crabs are omnivorous scavengers. They will consume detritus, algae, and leftover food, helping to maintain tank cleanliness. Supplement their diet with meaty foods such as finely chopped seafood or specialised invertebrate pellets to ensure optimal health.
Care Requirements: Maintain stable marine conditions with a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025, and good water quality. Moderate water flow is preferred to mimic their natural habitat without causing stress.
Reef Safety: Generally considered reef safe, though they may occasionally pick at soft corals or sessile invertebrates. Monitor behaviour closely when introduced to sensitive reef systems.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock and hiding places to allow natural decorating behaviour and shelter. They thrive in tanks with ample surfaces to explore and adorn.
