The Humpback Grouper (Cromileptes altivelis) is a visually stunning species prized for its unusual body shape and elegant swimming style. Recognisable by its pronounced hump and spotted pattern, this grouper adds a dramatic focal point to large marine aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a suitably large tank to thrive.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally semi-aggressive. It can be territorial, especially towards smaller fish, so it is best housed with similarly sized or larger tank mates. Avoid keeping with very small or timid species.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as live or frozen crustaceans, fish fillets, and specialised carnivore pellets to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: Due to its potential size and activity level, a minimum tank volume of 300 litres (approximately 80 gallons) is recommended. Provide ample hiding places and open swimming areas.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents is ideal to maintain water quality and fish health.
Placement: Best placed as a centerpiece fish in a large tank with rockwork to provide shelter and territory boundaries.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 50 cm (20 inches) in captivity.
