The Humpback Grouper (Cromileptes altivelis) is a visually impressive marine fish prized for its unique body shape and graceful movements. Recognisable by its pronounced hump and spotted pattern, this species adds a dramatic focal point to large marine aquaria.
Care Level: This species is best suited to advanced hobbyists due to its size and specific care needs. It requires a well-maintained, mature aquarium with stable water parameters.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Humpback Grouper is generally semi-aggressive and territorial, especially as it matures. It should be housed with similarly sized or larger tank mates to avoid predation or bullying. Avoid keeping with very small or timid species.
Diet: Carnivorous by nature, this grouper thrives on a varied diet of meaty foods such as live or frozen crustaceans, fish, and specialised carnivore pellets. Regular feeding 2-3 times per week is recommended to maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: Due to its potential size and active swimming behaviour, a minimum tank size of 300 litres is advised. Provide plenty of rockwork and caves to establish territories and offer hiding places.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution – may prey on smaller invertebrates and fish, so not recommended for delicate reef systems.
