Comatula spp. (Yellowish) are beautiful featherstars known for their delicate, feathery arms and graceful movement in the water column. These passive invertebrates are a captivating addition to marine reef tanks, offering natural filtration and aesthetic appeal.
Care Level: Moderate care is recommended due to their specialised feeding requirements and sensitivity to water quality.
Feeding: Comatula spp. are suspension feeders that capture plankton and fine particulate matter from the water. Supplement their diet with finely chopped marine plankton, phytoplankton, or commercially available liquid invertebrate foods. Feeding should be done several times a week to maintain health.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: These featherstars are peaceful and reef safe, making them suitable for most reef aquarium setups. Avoid housing with aggressive fish or invertebrates that may harm their delicate arms.
Water Flow and Placement: Provide moderate, indirect water flow to facilitate feeding without damaging their fragile arms. Position them on stable rockwork or substrate where they can anchor securely and extend their feeding arms freely.
Lighting: Standard reef aquarium lighting is sufficient as Comatula spp. do not rely on photosynthesis.
Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 75 litres (20 gallons) is advisable to ensure stable water parameters and adequate space for feeding currents.
Origin and Size: Origin and maximum size vary within the genus; therefore, conservative husbandry practices are recommended. Available in various sizes to suit different aquarium setups.
